Fans of the much-loved BBC drama, Call the Midwife, should prepare themselves for potential changes to the show. The period drama, which follows a group of midwives in 1950s East End London, is one of the most popular and heartwarming shows on television.

However, Heidi Thomas, the show's writer who has been with the programme since its inception in 2012, has hinted that the series may "take a break", reports the Mirror. As the 14th series airs, 62-year-old Heidi said: "Those of us who are most invested with the show, cast and producers alike, who have been there since the beginning, it is our lives. I don't believe Call the Midwife will ever end. But I do think we might take a break at some point."

She told the Radio Times that BBC executives were keeping their plans quiet, confessing she wasn't "in a position to talk about things, really". She said: "There is a sort of a rolling, ongoing conversation that we always have at this point every year, which is: is there an end point?"

Could a spin-off be in the works?

Despite the possibility of a hiatus, fans shouldn't be too disheartened as there could be a spin-off series in the works. Heidi said: "Increasingly, we do see opportunities to expand our storytelling world. So if we do take a break, it will be with a view to looking at other aspects of Call the Midwife."

When asked if she was hinting at a spin-off series, she playfully advised: "Watch this space."

Actress Megan Cusack has announced her departure from the BBC's beloved series Call the Midwife after a four-year tenure playing Nancy. Her exit details remain under wraps, but Megan confirmed she is seeking new opportunities in her acting career.

Nancy's storyline took a romantic turn during the Christmas special where she and pharmaceutical rep Roger, portrayed by Connor O'Donnell, connected. Following their engagement in the first episode of series 14 last month, Nancy and her daughter Collette moved away from Nonnatus House to Netherditch, Surrey.

The nurse and midwife will make her final Poplar appearance in the Call the Midwife season finale on Sunday (March 2), where Nancy is set to marry Roger. Sources close to the production share that Megan — who became a part of the hit show in 2021 and hails from the prominent Cusack acting family, including aunts Niamh and Sinéad — is eager to embrace different acting challenges.
