New evidence suggests that King Richard III may indeed have been responsible for the murder of his young nephews, known as the Princes in the Tower. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of King Edward V and his brother Richard from the Tower of London in 1483 has long puzzled historians.

However, new "bombshell evidence" evidence has emerged as part of a new Channel 5 documentary which airs tonight (Tuesday, December 3). And it appears to add fuel to the fire surrounding the rumours of Richard's involvement before he was killed at the Battle of Bosworth and later found under a Leicester car park, reports the Daily Star.

The recent discovery of Lady Margaret Capell's will, which includes a mention of Edward's treasured chain, strengthens the theory that Richard III - the boys' uncle - ordered their deaths. The incriminating document connects prime suspect Sir James Tyrell, a knight loyal to Richard III and brother-in-law to Lady Margaret, to the piece of jewellery.

What happened to the Princes has long been discussed by historians

While it remains unclear how she came into possession of the chain, historians have labelled it a "vital link". Tracy Borman, from Historic Royal Palaces, said: "This chain provides a vital link to the young Edward V, and the fact it was in the possession of someone closely linked with a prime suspect in their presumed murder could be hugely significant."

She described the discovery as "extremely exciting" and potentially "a smoking gun".

Richard III, who had declared the boys illegitimate heirs, has long been suspected of the crime. Professor Tim Thornton, from the Royal Historical Society, discovered the 1522 will mentioning the chain. He suggested that "the balance of probabilities is tilting towards" Richard being guilty.

The evidence will be explored in the new documentary, The Princes In The Tower: a Damning Discovery, which airs tonight (Tuesday) at 9pm on Channel 5.
