A 115-year-old family business which has clothed generations of Leicestershire people is to close its last remaining shop this summer. The owners of Irish Clothing have announced they are to shut their store in Church Gate, Loughborough town centre, on Monday, June 30, saying they could see "no way forward" for the business.

The retailer, which closed its iconic store in High Street, in Leicester city centre several years ago - the building is now home to a Caffe Nero - blamed "external factors" for the latest closure, but did not elaborate. Bosses posted on social media: "It is with great sadness and very heavy hearts that we share the news of Irish Clothing Company's challenging decision to close our doors for the final time.

"We are immensely proud of the business we have built over the 115 years of our trading. It has been the most incredible journey and one we will never forget. Despite our best efforts and now seemingly insurmountable odds, we feel there is no way forward. Our decision to close is primarily a consequence of external forces.

"To all our customers and supplies over the years: Thank you, you were the driving force behind our every step and we have loved serving and working with every single one of you. To all our dedicated team members past and present, your passion, hard work and commitment have been the very core of our journey and we are grateful beyond words for every moment you have given us.

"John, Vivienne, Tom and the whole of the Irish Clothing family would like to take this moment to personally thank everybody who has been a part of their 115 year story. Your support and engagement has meant the world to them and the memories and bonds made will endure. It has been a privilege."

The announcement was greeted with shock on Facebook and stirred memories of shopping visits or time spent working at the company's stores. Tammy Dunnan wrote: "So so sorry. Be proud your independent company thrived for so long, above and beyond many others.

"It's companies like yours we need more of. When are the powers that be going to realise what they are doing to our wonderful once was city and surrounding towns that we used to love to visit. Good luck to all involved."

Lynn Shilton added: "Wow what an achievement 115 years. So sad for you all. A fabulous family and shop. Good luck to you all on your next endeavours." While Christian Spender said: "Another Big blow to Loughborough, losing another fantastic shop. Church Gate will not be the same."

Former staff member Paul Wren posted: "I'm really sorry to hear this, I've fond memories of working for Tom and John and working with the amazing people. Well done for keeping going through these horrendous high street trading conditions. I hope all those impacted find opportunities swiftly, and the family take a well-earned retirement."

The team at Loughborough BID, which promotes businesses in the town, also responded to the post. They wrote: "You have been a true asset to Church Gate and to Loughborough and will be greatly missed."
