Parents of little ones are being offered the chance to take part in free play sessions on offer across Leicestershire from this week. The sessions are being held at a number of Leicestershire venues.

Leicestershire County Council said parents and carers with babies and toddlers aged 0–2-years can take part in the interactive play sessions. They include sensory fun, messy play, ‘Mini Movers’ and language workshops.

The sessions started earlier this week and are part of Leicestershire County Council's Family Hub ‘Start for Life’. Last year, the initiative saw more than 200 children join in with free organised activities, the authority said.

The council said Start for Life sessions offer fun, practical ways to aid child development through play. Some of the sessions are turn up and play, however some of them are bookable, these include:

  • Let’s get Messy – A hands on creative play session to support sensory development
  • Tip Top Talkers – A language and communication workshop with expert guidance
  • Little Senses – Sensory activities to stimulate early brain development
  • Mini Movers & Natural Play- Energetic sessions encouraging movement, coordination and exploration
  • Leicestershire Family Hubs provide a welcoming space for families to access support advice, and activities for children and young people

Councillor Deborah Taylor, lead member for children and families said: “Play is a vital part of early childhood development, and these sessions provide a fantastic way for families to learn, bond and have fun together. The Start for Life initiative helps parents and carers feel more confident in supporting their little ones learning through simple and engaging activities.”

The sessions run until Thursday, April 17. More information can be found by searching 'Family Hubs Leicestershire' online.
