HGV drivers have been warned they will face a 39-mile diversion to cope with village roadworks next month. Officials at Leicestershire County Council have issued the warning ahead of the works which cover a small section of road.

The works, which were announced by the council's highways team last week, will take place along a small section of Stathern Lane in Harby, north of Melton. The full road closure will impact traffic for those passing numbers 69 and 71 in Stathern Lane.

The closure, which has been announced on public safety grounds, will allow Severn Trent to carry out installation works in the area, according to the council. A major diversion has been announced as part of the works.

In a statement, the county council said all traffic will be affected and delays are expected, but a specific 39-mile diversion route - the equivalent of 63 kilometres - for lorries will add up to one hour to their journeys. Emergency access will be maintained throughout the closure.

The proposed alternative HGV diversion route will be via: Long Lane Stathern, Long Lane Redmile, Belvoir Road Bottesford, A52 (from Bottesford to Bingham), A46, A606 (via Upper/Nether Broughton), Clawson Road Ab Kettleby, Clawson Lane, Eastwell Road, Scalford Road, Waltham Road Eaton, Waltham Lane, Stathern Lane Harby, Harby Road, Stathern and vice versa, the council said.

The closure will be in place from Saturday, March 1 between 8am and 6pm on Sunday, March 2. More information is available on the one.network website.
