Drivers are being warned of a two-week closure on a main route to tackle flooding under a Leicestershire bridge. Bus services are also set to be impacted by the works, with diversions set to be in place.

The warning has been issued ahead of works starting next week under Blaby Bridge in Leicester Road between Glen Parva and Blaby. The bridge has often suffered with flooding, with Leicestershire County Council confirming that work to remedy the issue is now taking place.

The authority said the work will involve replacing gullies and associated work under the bridge. It's a project that will require a full closure of Leicester Road around the bridge, with diversion routes to be put in place.

Sue Jordan, county councillor for Blaby and Glen Parva, said the project was "important work" that the authority hopes will be completed as soon as possible. She said: "This work was planned in October and will start on half-term week to cause minimum disruption. The engineers are trying to get it finished in the first week and are 99 per cent sure they will."

Pedestrian access will be in place throughout the two-week closure, but Arriva will be unable to provide a bus service to Glen Parva during the first week. Coun Jordan continued: "The Blaby service will use the diversion route but journeys could take 25 minutes longer than normal. If the engineers find problems or there is really bad weather the work may go into the second week and if so there will be buses in Glen Parva, using a small diversion route."

Arriva confirmed its buses will divert from Leicester Road via Soar Valley Way, St Johns, Enderby Road and Blaby Bypass. The diversion is a total of 4.7 miles.
