Monopoly, the iconic board game, is a household name across the globe, with various editions gracing countries far and wide. For many in the UK, it's through Monopoly that they first become acquainted with celebrated locations such as Pall Mall and Trafalgar Square.

You might find it easy to picture the colours of these famous spots and their placement on the game board. However, you could be taken aback to discover that not everyone shares your memory or perception, particularly regarding two specific board spaces.

A debate has emerged over the 'true' colour of the game's priciest properties, Mayfair and Park Lane. While a faction of players insists these spaces are purple, others argue they are navy, blue, or dark blue.

In a survey conducted on X, where participants were asked "Park Lane and Mayfair on a Monopoly board, are they purple or dark blue?", the results showed 33% siding with purple and a majority of 67% choosing dark blue, reports Cambridgeshire Live.

On a Reddit discussion, a puzzled user queried: "I seem to remember them being purple, however since searching Google Images I have seen them in various shades of blue. Can someone point me in the direction of an image with what they think is the correct colour? "

Responding to this, one individual asserted "they have always been blue", while another claimed "they've been dark blue since 1935".

On another Reddit thread, a curious poster sparked an intriguing debate by asking: "Having an argument over Monopoly. Back in the day I had an edition that had Park Lane and Mayfair as purple, or was mine just the only one?"

The online community chimed in with varied responses. One person confirmed, "mine had Park Lane and Mayfair in violet, so yes, a bluey purple" while another asserted, "Park Lane and Mayfair is always purple" and yet another stated firmly, "Mayfair and Park Lane are purple, simple."

What are the colours of the other Monopoly spaces?

Despite the debate, it seems that there is a clear correct answer to the question of whether the squares are dark blue or purple. On Wikibooks, a page entitled "Monopoly/official rules" lists all the colours and says: "There are 22 streets in the game. Each street belongs to a colour set alongside one or two other streets. Starting from Go and proceeding clockwise, the colour sets are brown (purple in earlier editions), light blue, pink, orange, red, yellow, green and dark blue."

We've also asked Monopoly owners Hasbro to comment with their official position.

How many spaces are there on a Monopoly board?

What are the train station names?

In the UK version of Monopoly, the train stations are Kings Cross, Marylebone, Fenchurch Street and Liverpool Street.
