All staff at a luxury Leicestershire hotel which closed suddenly have been made redundant, liquidators have confirmed. Stapleford Park Hotel, near Melton, closed with “immediate effect” earlier this month as a result of “adverse trading conditions”.

Leonard Curtis was appointed as liquidators of the company Stapleford Park Limited, who traded the hotel but didn't own it, in the wake of its sudden closure. That move devastated many customers, with one nurse, who had been expecting to hold her wedding reception at the venue, suddenly left in the lurch.

In a statement today (Thursday, October 31), liquidators confirmed that all 92 staff at the hotel had been made redundant. Alex Cadwallader, one of the joint liquidators, said: “Our priority was to ensure the most orderly wind-down of trading possible. Significant efforts were made to communicate with and re-locate the guests that were staying at the hotel, which was at approximately 50 per cent occupancy."

They continued: “Leonard Curtis attended the site and worked closely with front of house staff to make this possible, and the wider group also met some essential costs to limit the impact on guests and future bookings. However we fully appreciate that some guests will have been adversely impacted.”

During its operation, the Grade I listed mansion had 48 guest rooms, with the site surrounded by 500 acres of land. Leonard Curtis said the business was unable to “generate the turnover required” to reach profitability and continue.

It added that this was despite “multiple hotel management partnerships and significant investment from shareholders”. All former staff have been advised to contact the Redundancy Payments Service, which will process eligible claims following the commencement of liquidation.
