Tesco is set to discontinue its convenient service, which currently enables patrons to execute payments via the supermarket's mobile application in-store. The retail giant intends to cease offering this feature from next month on March 7.

At present, those making purchases at Tesco stores can utilise the app by selecting "Pay In-Store", a functionality that affords the combined advantage of paying and accruing Clubcard points simultaneously with a quick scan of a code.

The grocery chain said in email dispatched to its customers it was progressing towards the "phasing out" of this option, meaning shoppers will soon have to perform the two actions independently.

Tesco announced: "To ensure we're able to keep bringing out the best value and convenience, we've taken the decision to remove the pay in-store feature, formally known as Tesco Pay+, from the Tesco app. Between now and March 7, the pay in-store feature will be phased out and any linked card details will be removed, unless you're using them for GetGo, Whoosh, or home delivery shopping.

"Therefore, when you're next shopping in-store, you'll be required to make your payment separately following the scanning of your Clubcard. Nonetheless, you can continue to collect points and enjoy Clubcard Prices simply by scanning your Clubcard or app at the checkout. Alternatively, you have the choice to integrate your Clubcard with your Apple or Google Wallets.", reports the Mirror.

Tesco shoppers have voiced their dissatisfaction on social media following the supermarket's decision to remove a popular app feature, which many regarded as a convenient time-saver. Some customers also mentioned they preferred using the app to avoid the need to carry physical cards.

A disgruntled user on Reddit expressed their frustration, commenting that the change was "so annoying" and failed to see how it would add value, questioning: "How is it more convenient to turn what was one step, into two."

Another individual lamented the loss of daily convenience, stating: "Use it daily... It's pretty convenient for me. There is no need to scan Clubcard. Just pay with the app; it's quite a strange move from Tesco."

A third customer bemoaned the update, posting: "I literally use this for every purchase, whyyyyyyyyy." Meanwhile, another remarked on the practicality of the app for buying breakfast at work without needing a wallet. One more shopper found the app "handy" for fuel payments at petrol stations.

While some speculated that Tesco might be aiming to cut down on app processing tasks, the company indicated that the change was part of routine evaluations of customer payment options. A Tesco spokesperson clarified: "We regularly review the payment options available to our customers. It's still quick easy to earn points on your shopping and fuel and enjoy Clubcard Prices offers by tapping your Clubcard in-store, scanning it via the Tesco App, or by adding it to your Apple or Google wallet."
