Weapons and more than 100 cannabis plants were uncovered at a home in a Leicestershire raid last week. A "large quantity" of cash was also found by officers during the incident.

Leicestershire Police conducted the raid at the property in Shepshed on Saturday (February 22) after residents had raised concerns about drug cultivation in the area. Images released by the force show officers in full protective gear smashing the property's door off its hinges with a ram before entering.

Inside, police discovered more than 100 cannabis plants and some unspecified "weapons". A "large quantity" of cash was also recovered from the scene.

Officers said they also discovered the property's electricity meter had been bypassed to save on energy bills. This, police said, can lead to fires in cannabis factories.

Describing the raid, police said: "We conducted a warrant at an address [...] after local residents raised concerns that drugs were being cultivated inside. After forcing entry, we located in excess of 100 cannabis plants, a large quantity of cash as well as weapons.

"A further inspection also showed that the electricity was bypassed and work is being done to ensure that the property is now safe. Thank you to those residents who contacted us expressing these concerns. If you suspect that drugs are being dealt from an address near you, please contact us."

The force's actions have been widely praised online, with one saying: "About time". A second said: "That explains why it always smells 'fruity' round there."

However, not all believed police were in the right. One person claimed the raid was a "monumental waste of police, court, and prison resources". They believed that cannabis, a Class B drug, should be legalised in the UK to bring it in line with the likes of Canada.
